Below are the job descriptions for employment areas in the Academic Center for Excellence. Open postings for Academic Coach & Front Desk positions will appear on the Ìý people admin page. Student Tutor openings will be on a rolling basis throughout the academic year and are based upon student tutoring requests.

Academic Coach

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Academic Coaches will provide small group and individual tutorial assistance for the existing course curriculum. Coaches also aid in the development of students’ self-esteem, learning, study strategies, and critical thinking skills. Coaches will work with students to identify their areas of strength and help students to take accountability for their educational choices and actions. The Academic Coach bridges the gap between the college and the needs of the student. This position also helps students make academic progress while promoting independent learning and self-reliance. Coaches assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work; and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, active reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses. Coaches also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors; tutor students in specific content areas; and provide online tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Assisting students with course content and problem-solving
  • Providing individual and group tutoring
  • Facilitating study groups and review sessions
  • Creating academic resources/guides for student use
  • Maintaining records of tutoring appointments
  • Utilizing tutoring management system to create, log, and detail appointments
  • Hosting workshops
  • Referring students to appropriate resources
  • Supporting learning and study skills development
  • Assisting students with general computer troubleshooting necessary for coursework
  • Providing embedded tutoring services, as assigned

CONTENT AREAS: Academic Coaches are expected to have the expertise (an earned degree) in one or more of the following content areas:

  • Accounting
  • Anatomy & Physiology / Human Biology
  • Biology

  • Computer Information / Programming
  • English as a Second Language
  • History
  • Math
  • Psychology
  • Reading / Adult Literacy
  • Writing

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree or higher in a related content area or curriculum.

  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Responsible, dependable, honest, & mature
  • In-depth understanding of the content area(s) the applicant wishes to tutor

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with students in secondary/higher education. Experience utilizing online conferencing software (ex. ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, etc.).

WORKING HOURS: 5 – 28 hours per week (In-Person) Weekly hours to be determined upon hire. ACE is open Monday – Thursday 8:00am – 6:00pm,Ìý Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm, & Saturday 10:00am – 2:00pm (September – December / January – May)

SALARY: Beginning Fall 2022: $20.60 per hour – Associate’s or Bachelor’s / $22.66 per hour – Master’s and above

Front Desk

We will be hiring for the ACE @ NFCI location for the Spring 2024 semester. Details to follow.ÌýÌý

General Description: The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) provides SUNY Niagara students with academic support services such as tutoring and student success workshops. The Technical Assistant – ACE Front Desk position is responsible for the oversight of students logging in/out of the center, greeting individuals, answering phone calls, assisting students with technical issues (computers/printing), assisting students with appointments, inventorying paper/printing supplies, and general housekeeping.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Greets students, staff, and faculty at the front desk; answers questions in regards to the Academic Center for Excellence.
  • Assists with logging into and out of the Learning Management System.
  • Assists with the appointment-based system for the center.
  • Assists with computer and printing troubleshooting within the center.
  • Answers phone calls and assists with student inquiries.
  • Place maintenance and/or help desk tickets when appropriate.
  • Communicates with the ACE Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions: Ability to relate to a diverse academic community; strong interpersonal skills; ability to utilize technology in the performance of duties; ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment

Required Qualifications: Associate’s degree or higher. Experience with/knowledge of Microsoft Office. Ability to multitask and work with a single student or multiple students at once, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment are required.

Desirable Qualifications: Experience with computer programs such as Go Print, Google Apps, Windows 10, Accudemia, and/or Paper Cut. Experience with Brightspace and/or Banner Web. Experience with and/or knowledge of services within SUNY Niagara.

WORKING HOURS: 14 – 28 hours per week (In-Person) Weekly hours to be determined upon hire. Hours available are Monday – Thursday 7:30am – 6:00pm, Friday 7:30am – 4:00pm , & Saturday 10:00am – 2:00pm.

Student Tutor

APPLICATION:Ìý

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student Tutor applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and have earned a grade of ‘B’ or higher in each course they are applying to tutor.
  • Student Tutors must obtain a signature from the professor they took the course with or the department chair.
  • Student Tutors are expected to tutor courses below the highest level of completed coursework. For example, a student that is able to tutor in ENG 102 should/will be listed to tutor ENG 101.
  • Student Tutors must be able to commit to tutoring for the entire semester.
  • Student Tutors must have good verbal and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work with students from varied backgrounds and with varieties of skill levels.
  • Student Tutors must have an excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Student Tutors must exhibit appropriate and professional behavior at all times.

DUTIES:

  • Student Tutors work with students on a one-on-one basis or in small group sessions to answer questions on course content, to aid in comprehension of course material, and to help with studying the course material.
  • Notify the Coordinator of ACE of any changes to your tutoring situation
  • Tutors can contact professors, if necessary, to obtain course syllabi and materials or to discuss the course content.
  • Attend mandatory tutor information sessions as required by the Coordinator of ACE.

$15.50 hourly rate (as of January 1, 2024)
